Pollinations.ai API: Free Text & Image Generation API (2026)
Free 'Quest Pollen' earned from one-off tasks (about 3 Pollen from setup quests); otherwise pay-as-you-go Pollen (1 Pollen = $1)
Pollinations provides an OpenAI-compatible API at gen.pollinations.ai for text, image, video, audio, realtime voice and embeddings. Generation requests need an API key from enter.pollinations.ai and are billed in Pollen, which you buy (one dollar buys one Pollen) or earn for free as 'Quest Pollen' by completing quests such as creating your first key (0.25 Pollen) or trying each model type. Quest Pollen only works on models not marked paid-only. Legacy raw publishable keys are limited to 1 Pollen per IP per hour, and the model catalogue endpoints are public without auth.
Who is eligible
- Pollinations account (enter.pollinations.ai)
- Quest Pollen can be spent only on models that aren't marked paid-only
How to claim it
- Sign in at enter.pollinations.ai
- Create a secret (sk_) key on the Keys page — this also completes the 'Create your first API key' quest
- Complete and claim quests in the dashboard to earn free Quest Pollen, or top up Paid Pollen
- Call https://gen.pollinations.ai with Authorization: Bearer <key> (or point any OpenAI SDK at https://gen.pollinations.ai/v1)
Limits
| Free Quest Pollen | One-off rewards per quest (e.g. 0.25 Pollen for first API key, 1 Pollen for connecting the Polli CLI) |
|---|---|
| Paid-only models | Can't be used with Quest Pollen (403 without Paid Pollen) |
| Legacy raw pk_ keys | 1 Pollen per IP per hour |
| Budget exhausted | Returns 402 PAYMENT_REQUIRED |
| Per-model request limits | Published per model in the /models response (per_user_rpm) |
Catches & caveats
Older anonymous no-key access (image.pollinations.ai / text.pollinations.ai) has been superseded by keyed access on gen.pollinations.ai. Free Pollen now comes from one-off quests; we found no documented recurring daily grant. Quest rewards and model prices are read from Pollinations' live catalogs and change often.
Short answer: Pollinations is no longer an anonymous, unlimited free API. Every generation request needs a key and is charged in Pollen (one Pollen corresponds to one US dollar). The free part is Quest Pollen: small one-off rewards for tasks like creating your first key or trying each model type, worth about 3 Pollen for the basic setup quests. That goes a long way on cheap models, but it only works on models that aren't marked paid-only.
What Pollinations offers
Pollinations runs a single API at gen.pollinations.ai that puts text, image, video, audio (speech, transcription, voice changing), realtime voice, embeddings and even 3D generation behind one key and one balance. It speaks the OpenAI Chat Completions, Responses, Images, Embeddings, Audio and Realtime APIs, and its text models also accept Anthropic Messages requests. The catalog mixes major commercial models (OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, Mistral and others), open models, and community models that other developers publish and earn from.
At the time of checking, the public text catalog listed 225 models and the image/video catalog 84, of which 127 text models and 67 image models were marked paid-only. Those counts change frequently; the live lists at gen.pollinations.ai/text/models and gen.pollinations.ai/image/models are public and need no key.
How Pollen works
| Balance type | How you get it | What it can be spent on |
|---|---|---|
| Quest Pollen | Free: completing quests in the dashboard | Any model not marked paid-only |
| Paid Pollen | Topping up in the dashboard, or an x402 prepaid key bought with USDC | All models, including paid-only ones |
Your account's GET /account/balance response reports both buckets (tier for Quest Pollen, paid for Paid Pollen) and their total. Regular models draw on the total; paid-only models only draw on Paid Pollen. Every model in the catalog lists its price in Pollen per token, per image or per second, depending on the modality.
Pollinations' x402 prepaid keys accept any amount from $0.01 to $10,000 and credit the key with the same amount of Pollen — which is how we know one Pollen corresponds to one dollar.
Free Quest Pollen: what you can earn
Quests are listed in your dashboard and in the public catalog at gen.pollinations.ai/quests/catalog. Rewards are paid into the Quest Pollen bucket, and claiming is done in the dashboard. These are the main ones listed when we checked:
| Quest | Reward (Pollen) | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Create your first API key | 0.25 | Setup |
| Use a text model / image model / audio model / video model (one successful request each) | 0.25 each (1.00 total) | Setup |
| Use a Pollinations app (log in to an app from the apps directory) | 0.25 | Setup |
| Use an agent | 0.25 | Setup |
| Try a community model | 0.25 | Setup |
| Connect the Polli CLI | 1 | Setup |
| Join the Pollinations Discord | 1 | Community |
| Sign in with a GitHub account at least three years old | 1 | Contribute |
| Reach level 10 / level 20 on Discord | 2 / 5 | Community |
| Report an issue that gets fixed | 3 | Contribute |
| Get a pull request merged into the Pollinations repository | 5 | Contribute |
| Build things others use (apps listed, agents or community models used) | 2–10 | Grow |
| Bounty issues tagged POLLEN-QUEST | Varies (2–15 seen) | Contribute |
Adding up the setup quests: 0.25 (key) + 1.00 (four model types) + 0.25 (app) + 0.25 (agent) + 0.25 (community model) + 1 (CLI) = 3.0 Quest Pollen. Discord and a long-standing GitHub account can add 2 more. Some quests are tied to topping up, so they're not free. Quests can be added, changed or retired at any time.
What the free Pollen buys
Prices below come from Pollinations' live model catalog; the per-request figures are our arithmetic. Both models are usable with Quest Pollen.
| Model | Published price | Example | Per 0.25 Pollen | Per 3 Pollen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| openai/gpt-5.4-nano (text) | 0.15 Pollen / 1M input tokens; 0.9375 / 1M output tokens | 500-token prompt + 300-token answer ≈ 0.00036 Pollen | ≈ 700 requests | ≈ 8,400 requests |
| tongyi-mai/z-image-turbo (image) | 0.004 Pollen per image | One image = 0.004 Pollen | ≈ 62 images | 750 images |
| black-forest-labs/flux.1.1-pro (image) | 0.03 Pollen per image | One image = 0.03 Pollen | 8 images | 100 images |
Worked example for GPT-5.4 Nano: 500 × 0.15 ÷ 1,000,000 = 0.000075 Pollen for input, plus 300 × 0.9375 ÷ 1,000,000 ≈ 0.000281 for output, for about 0.000356 Pollen per request. 0.25 ÷ 0.000356 ≈ 700. Frontier models and video cost far more, and many of them are paid-only anyway.
Step-by-step: getting started
- Sign in at enter.pollinations.ai.
- Open the Keys page and create a secret key (sk_). Give it only the model permissions and budget you need; keys support per-key budgets, permissions and expiry.
- Claim your quest rewards in the dashboard as you complete them.
- Check which models you can use: in the catalog, models with paid_only set to true need Paid Pollen.
- Send a request with Authorization: Bearer <your key>, or use the OpenAI SDK as below.
- Watch your balance with GET /account/balance and history with GET /account/usage (the key needs the account:usage permission).
from openai import OpenAI
client = OpenAI(
base_url="https://gen.pollinations.ai/v1",
api_key="sk_your_secret_key",
)
resp = client.chat.completions.create(
model="openai/gpt-5.4-nano",
messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Summarise the theory of relativity in one sentence."}],
)
print(resp.choices[0].message.content)Simple GET endpoints such as /image/{prompt} and /text/{prompt} also accept the key as a ?key= query parameter for places that can't set headers, but never put a secret key in a public web page.
Key types and the legacy free path
| Key | Prefix | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Secret key | sk_ | Backend use. Never ship it in a browser, mobile app or repository. |
| App key (BYOP) | pk_ with redirect URIs | OAuth client ID for web, mobile or CLI apps where users authorize your app and spend their own Pollen. |
| Raw publishable key | pk_ with no app binding | Legacy only, rate-limited to 1 Pollen per IP per hour. Pollinations says not to create new ones or embed them in new browser code. |
Pollinations used to be known for completely open, no-key URLs on image.pollinations.ai and text.pollinations.ai. That model has been replaced by keyed access on gen.pollinations.ai. If you find old tutorials using those URLs, expect them to need a key now.
Building apps where users pay
For public apps, the free route that scales is Connect User Wallets (also called Bring Your Own Pollen). You register a publishable App Key with your redirect URIs; users sign in with Pollinations through OAuth 2.1 (PKCE for web apps or a device flow for CLIs) and approve a budget and expiry; you receive a scoped sk_ key that spends their Pollen, not yours. Users can revoke it at any time from their dashboard. Several quests reward this: your first connected user, ten external users, and Paid Pollen flowing through your app.
Developers who publish community models or agents receive 75% of the Pollen spent on them, kept in the same bucket (Quest or Paid) that the caller paid with. Pollinations says cash payouts are not currently available, so earnings can only be spent on the platform.
Limits and errors to expect
- 402 PAYMENT_REQUIRED — the key authenticated but the account balance or the key's budget is exhausted.
- 403 FORBIDDEN — insufficient permissions, or a paid-only model without Paid Pollen.
- 429 RATE_LIMITED — too many requests. Per-model user limits appear as per_user_rpm in the /models response; a null value means Pollinations adds no cap of its own.
- Media caps — video durations, allowed resolutions and reference-image counts are published per model in the catalog, and requests outside those ranges are rejected.
- Uploads — uploaded media get unique, publicly readable URLs with a 30-day lifecycle unless refreshed.
A secret key with no budget can spend your whole balance, including Paid Pollen. Set a per-key budget, especially for keys used in scripts or agents.
How it compares with other free AI APIs
Pollinations' strength is breadth: one key for text, images, video, audio and embeddings, plus a user-pays model for public apps. Its free allowance is small and one-off rather than recurring. If you need a renewable free quota, these may suit better:
| Option | Free allowance | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare Workers AI | 10,000 Neurons per day, renewing | Text, embeddings and FLUX images at the edge |
| Gemini API free tier | Many models free of charge, rate-limited | Text and multimodal with Google models |
| Groq free tier | Rate-limited free plan | Fast open-model chat and Whisper transcription |
| OpenRouter free models | Free :free model variants with daily caps | Trying many text models with one key |
| ElevenLabs free tier | 10,000 credits per month (no commercial license) | Higher-end text-to-speech |

Common mistakes
- Using old no-key URLs. Anonymous access has been superseded; requests now need a key.
- Choosing a paid-only model with only Quest Pollen. Check paid_only in the catalog first.
- Embedding a secret key in front-end code. Use an App Key with Connect User Wallets instead.
- Forgetting to claim quests. Rewards are claimed in the dashboard; the API only reports their status.
- Assuming a daily refill. We found no documented recurring free grant; plan around one-off quest rewards or top-ups.
Frequently asked questions
›Is the Pollinations.ai API free?
Partly. Generation is billed in Pollen, but you can earn free 'Quest Pollen' by completing quests listed in the dashboard and the public quest catalog — for example 0.25 Pollen for creating your first API key and 0.25 for each first text, image, audio and video request. We couldn't find a documented recurring daily grant; beyond quests, Pollen is pay-as-you-go.
›Does Pollinations need an API key?
Yes, generation endpoints require a bearer key. Only the model catalogue endpoints and public media URLs work without one.
›How much is one Pollen worth?
Pollinations' x402 prepaid-key option lets you pay any amount from $0.01 to $10,000 and gives the key the same amount of Pollen, so one Pollen corresponds to one US dollar.
›What is the difference between Quest Pollen and Paid Pollen?
Quest Pollen is earned for free through quests; Paid Pollen is bought. Your account balance combines both for regular models, but models marked paid-only can be used with Paid Pollen alone.
›How far does free Quest Pollen go?
It depends on the model. At the published prices, GPT-5.4 Nano costs 0.15 Pollen per million input tokens and 0.9375 per million output tokens, so a 500-in/300-out request costs about 0.00036 Pollen and 0.25 Pollen covers roughly 700 such requests. The Z-Image Turbo image model costs 0.004 Pollen per image, so 0.25 Pollen covers about 62 images.
›Is Pollinations OpenAI-compatible?
Yes. Point any OpenAI SDK at https://gen.pollinations.ai/v1 and pass your sk_ key. It supports Chat Completions, Responses, Images, Embeddings, Audio and Realtime, and text models also accept Anthropic Messages requests.
›Can I still use Pollinations without signing up?
Not for new projects. Older anonymous no-key access has been superseded, and raw publishable keys are legacy-only, limited to 1 Pollen per IP per hour. The no-account option today is buying a prepaid key with USDC via x402, which is paid.
›What does a 402 error from Pollinations mean?
402 PAYMENT_REQUIRED means your key authenticated but the account balance or the key's own budget is exhausted. A 403 can mean the model is paid-only and you have no Paid Pollen.
›Can my app's users pay with their own Pollen?
Yes. With Connect User Wallets (Bring Your Own Pollen), you register a publishable App Key and users authorize your app through OAuth; you receive a scoped sk_ key that spends the user's Pollen within the budget and expiry they approved.
