Claude for Open Source: 6 Months of Free Claude Max 20x for Maintainers
6 months of Claude Max 20x free
Anthropic's Claude for Open Source Program gives qualifying open-source maintainers and contributors six months of Claude Max 20x at no cost. It is a personal subscription for individual use, not an API credit grant. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis with no fixed deadline, and the official terms cap the program at 10,000 approved recipients, a number Anthropic may increase.
Who is eligible
- Maintainers and library authors: 500+ dependent repos, 100+ dependent packages, or 200,000+ combined monthly downloads across registries such as npm, PyPI, crates.io or RubyGems
- Core contributors: listed committer or maintainer on a recognized foundation or language project (examples given include CPython, the Rust team, Node.js TSC, an Apache PMC, CNCF, Kubernetes, the Linux kernel, Django and Rails)
- Active contributors: 100+ merged pull requests to repos you don't own in the last 12 months
- Community builders: a repo of yours with 20+ unique external contributors with merged PRs in the last 12 months
- Critical infrastructure: a repo you maintain with an OpenSSF criticality score of 0.4 or higher
- Projects outside these thresholds may apply under the discretionary Ecosystem Impact track
- Terms for everyone: natural person aged 18+ (or the local age of majority), legal resident where Claude.ai is offered and not subject to US export controls or sanctions, GitHub account in good standing and at least 2 years old, public open-source activity in the 90 days before applying, and at least one project under an OSI-approved license
- Anthropic employees, contractors and agents, and their immediate and household family members, are not eligible
How to claim it
- Check which track you fit and gather links to your repositories, package pages or foundation listing
- Apply at claude.com/contact-sales/claude-for-oss
- Wait for rolling review; Anthropic contacts only approved applicants and commits to no timeline
- Activate the gift link within 90 days of receiving it; the 6 months run consecutively from activation
Catches & caveats
Value shown assumes Claude Max 20x at $200/month for 6 months. Early reports from the March 2026 launch cited thresholds of 5,000 GitHub stars or 1 million monthly npm downloads, and some posts mentioned a June 30, 2026 deadline; the current official page and terms use the tracks listed here and state no fixed deadline, so the program is listed as active until Anthropic closes it. The terms cap recipients at 10,000, which Anthropic may increase.
Short answer: If you maintain or regularly contribute to widely used open-source software, Anthropic will give you six months of Claude Max 20x free, worth $1,200 at the $200/month list price. You apply once, Anthropic reviews applications on a rolling basis, and approved applicants get a gift link that must be activated within 90 days. It is a personal Claude subscription, not a pool of API credits for your project.
What you get, and what you don't
| Item | Included? | Detail from the official terms |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Max 20x subscription | Yes | Six consecutive months from activation, no charge for the base subscription |
| Claude Code | Yes, as part of Max | Max plans include Claude Code; see Claude Code pricing |
| Overage beyond plan limits | Billed | Charged at Anthropic's standard overage pricing |
| API credits for your project | Not stated | The terms describe a subscription only; they don't mention API credits |
| Team or organization seats | No | Personal, individual use; no account sharing |
| Automatic renewal | No | Extensions are at Anthropic's discretion |
Claude Max 20x provides 20 times the usage of Pro per five-hour session, higher output limits and priority access at busy times, according to Anthropic's Max page. In practice that makes it a strong fit for long Claude Code sessions: triaging issues, reviewing pull requests, writing tests and drafting release notes across a large codebase. For current plan details see Claude pricing.
Eligibility tracks explained
You need to meet one of the tracks below, plus the general requirements in the terms. Meeting a threshold does not guarantee acceptance: Anthropic decides at its sole discretion and decisions are final.
| Track | Threshold | How to evidence it |
|---|---|---|
| Maintainers and library authors | 500+ dependent repos, or 100+ dependent packages, or 200,000+ combined monthly downloads | GitHub "Used by" counts, registry pages on npm, PyPI, crates.io or RubyGems |
| Core contributors | Listed committer or maintainer on a recognized foundation or language project | Link to the official team, PMC or maintainer list |
| Active contributors | 100+ merged PRs to repos you don't own in the last 12 months | A GitHub search of your merged PRs, excluding your own repos |
| Community builders | A repo with 20+ unique external contributors with merged PRs in the last 12 months | The repo's contributor graph or insights page |
| Critical infrastructure | A repo you maintain with an OpenSSF criticality score of 0.4+ | The project's OpenSSF criticality score |
| Ecosystem Impact (discretionary) | No fixed threshold | A clear explanation of what depends on your work |
General requirements in the terms
- You must be a natural person aged at least 18, or the age of majority where you live if higher.
- You must legally reside where Anthropic offers Claude.ai and not be subject to US export control or sanctions restrictions.
- Your GitHub account must be in good standing and at least two years old.
- You need public open-source activity (commits, PRs, reviews or releases) in the 90 days before you apply.
- You must maintain or contribute to at least one project under an OSI-approved license such as MIT, Apache 2.0, BSD or GPL.
- Anthropic employees, contractors and agents, and their immediate or household family members, cannot apply.
Downloads are counted across registries combined. A library with 120,000 monthly downloads on npm and 90,000 on PyPI reaches 210,000 and meets the 200,000 threshold, even though neither registry does on its own.
How to apply, step by step
- Pick the single track that you meet most clearly. If you fit several, lead with the one that is easiest to verify from public links.
- Collect evidence: repository URLs, registry pages, your foundation listing, or a link showing your merged PRs. Make sure your GitHub profile shows recent public activity within the last 90 days.
- Open the application at claude.com/contact-sales/claude-for-oss and select Apply now. Use the Claude account you want the subscription on.
- If you are applying under Ecosystem Impact, explain concretely who depends on your project, for example downstream packages, companies or distributions that ship it.
- Wait. Review is rolling, there is no committed timeline, and Anthropic contacts only approved applicants. Duplicate applications are disregarded, so don't resubmit to speed things up.
- If approved, activate the gift link within 90 days. Unactivated links expire and the subscription is forfeited.
After activation: dates, billing and the end of the benefit
- Benefit period: six consecutive months from the day you activate. Pausing or skipping months is not described.
- If you already pay: your Pro or Max subscription is paused, not canceled. It resumes at the end of the benefit period at your prior plan and rate unless you cancel. Anthropic says it will email you at least 30 days before paused billing resumes.
- If you were on the free plan: your account is upgraded in place and returns to the free plan afterwards unless you buy a plan.
- One per person: each person can hold only one active program subscription.
- Revocation: Anthropic can revoke the subscription for false information, artificially inflated metrics, multiple accounts, or breaches of its Terms of Service or Usage Policy, with no compensation.
A practical tip: put the end date in your calendar the day you activate. If you were on a paid plan and don't want it to restart at full price, cancel before the billing date in the reminder email.
Getting the most out of six months of Max 20x
- Install Claude Code early. Our Claude Code install guide covers setup; plan mode is useful for scoping large refactors before any file changes.
- Work the backlog. Use the higher limits for jobs maintainers rarely get to: stale issue triage, adding tests to untested modules, migrating deprecated APIs, and writing docs examples.
- Review contributions faster. Ask Claude to summarize a pull request, check it against your contributing guide and list edge cases to test.
- Keep it personal. The plan is for your own use. Wiring it into shared CI or giving other people access breaks the no-sharing rule.
History and changes
- Late February to early March 2026: Anthropic launches Claude for Open Source. Coverage at the time, such as The Deep View on March 3, 2026, cited thresholds of 5,000 GitHub stars or more than 1 million monthly npm downloads and said Anthropic would also accept high-impact projects that don't fit.
- Later in 2026: the official page moves to the five numeric tracks above (dependents, downloads, foundation roles, merged PRs, external contributors, OpenSSF score) plus the Ecosystem Impact route.
- October 17, 2026 (our last check): the terms state no fixed deadline, a cap of 10,000 approved recipients that Anthropic may raise, rolling review, and a 90-day activation window.
How it compares with other free routes
If you don't qualify, there are other ways to use Claude for less. Students should check the Claude student discount. Companies building products on the API should look at Claude for Startups, though direct applications there are closed as of October 2026. For a plain overview of what the free plan covers, see Is Claude free?. Maintainers who mainly want an AI coding assistant and are still at university can also compare the Copilot Student plan, which GitHub offers free to verified students.
Common mistakes
- Using a GitHub account younger than two years. The terms require an account at least two years old, so a new account created for the application won't qualify.
- No recent public activity. You need public contributions within the 90 days before you apply.
- Letting the gift link expire. It must be activated within 90 days or it is forfeited.
- Expecting a project-wide benefit. The subscription is individual. Each maintainer applies for their own.
- Inflating metrics. Artificially inflated stars, downloads or PR counts are grounds for revocation under the terms.
Frequently asked questions
›Is Claude Max free for open source maintainers?
Yes, if you are approved. The Claude for Open Source Program gives qualifying maintainers and contributors six consecutive months of Claude Max 20x at no charge for the base subscription.
›Does Claude for Open Source include API credits?
The program grants a Claude Max 20x subscription, not an API credit grant, and the terms say nothing about API credits. Paid Max 20x plans currently list monthly API credits for the Claude Platform, but the terms do not say whether complimentary program subscriptions receive them, so do not plan around it. Overage beyond plan limits is billed at Anthropic's standard overage pricing.
›What happens after the 6 months?
The complimentary subscription ends and does not auto-renew. If you had a paid plan, it was paused during the program and resumes at your prior plan and rate unless you cancel; Anthropic says it will email at least 30 days before paused billing resumes. Free accounts go back to the free plan.
›Can I apply if my project doesn't meet the thresholds?
Yes. Anthropic invites applicants who don't fit the numeric tracks to explain what they maintain that the ecosystem depends on. This Ecosystem Impact track is discretionary.
›Is there a deadline to apply?
The official terms set no fixed deadline. The program stays open until Anthropic closes it, which it may do at any time, and pending applications may not be considered once it closes. The cap is 10,000 approved recipients, which Anthropic may increase.
›How long does review take?
Anthropic reviews applications on a rolling basis with no committed timeline and contacts only approved applicants. If you are not contacted, you have not been approved, at least not yet.
›I already pay for Claude Pro or Max. What happens to my subscription?
Under the terms, an existing paid subscription is paused, not canceled, for the six-month benefit period, and resumes afterward unless you cancel before billing restarts. Free accounts are upgraded in place.
›Can I share the subscription with my project team?
No. The subscription is personal and for individual use only, has no cash value, cannot be transferred, and account sharing is prohibited. Each eligible maintainer should apply separately.
›Can I apply again after my six months end?
Previous recipients may re-apply if the program is still accepting applications, under the criteria in force at that time. Any extension is at Anthropic's discretion.
