Claude Student Discount (2026): What Students Actually Get

No individual student discount; free access via university Claude for Education deals and the Claude Campus program

Anthropic does not sell a discounted Claude Pro plan to individual students. Students get paid-tier Claude through their university when it buys the institution-wide Claude for Education plan, which covers students, faculty and staff. Anthropic also runs the Claude Campus program for 2026-27 (Claude Builder Club, Campus Conversations and Claude Science workshops), which pays selected student leaders a USD 3,600 stipend and gives Builder Club leads resources such as API credits to share with members. Applications for the 2026-27 cohort have closed.

Who is eligible

  • Claude for Education: students at a university that has signed an institution-wide Education plan (you sign in with your school email or single sign-on)
  • Claude Campus program: students anywhere in the world, 18+, with work authorization in their country of study and some Claude proficiency
  • Builder Club is for undergraduates; Campus Conversations for master's students in STEM or the humanities; Claude Science workshops for PhD students and postdocs who use Claude in their research
  • Graduate and PhD tracks may pick from a smaller pool of schools during the pilot period

How to claim it

  1. Ask your university IT or AI office whether your school has a Claude for Education plan, then sign in at claude.ai with your school account or the sign-in route your school publishes
  2. If your school has no plan, staff can contact Anthropic's education team at claude.com/contact-sales/education-plan
  3. To lead a Builder Club or another campus track, apply on claude.com/programs/campus during the application window (it ran Sept 1-12 for the 2026-27 cohort and is now closed)
  4. Free self-paced learning: take the 'AI Fluency for students' course on Anthropic Academy

Limits

Individual student priceNone; Pro is $20/month or $200/year for everyone
Campus stipendUSD 3,600 per selected student leader (all tracks)
Campus program termSeptember 2026 to June 2027
Campus age requirement18 or older, with work authorization

Catches & caveats

The campus page lists a Sept 1-12 application window and also says 'The program is closed for Fall 2026', so treat applications as closed until Anthropic announces the next cycle. Anthropic's older 'Claude Campus Ambassadors' and 'For student builders' forms now redirect to the Campus program page. Claude for Teachers (launched July 2026, free for verified US K-12 school and district staff who sign up by June 30, 2027) is not a student offer. No official page publishes a self-serve API credit grant for students in general.

Short answer: Anthropic has no student discount on Claude Pro or Max. There is no student price and no student verification step. Students get paid-tier Claude in two official ways: through their university if it has bought the institution-wide Claude for Education plan, or by being selected as a student leader in the Claude Campus program, which pays a USD 3,600 stipend. Everyone else, students included, can use the free Claude plan or pay the normal price, which is $20 a month or $200 a year for Pro.

What students can actually get from Anthropic

"Claude student discount" sounds like one offer, but there are several separate routes, and only some of them are open to you as an individual. The table below sums up each route as of October 2026, based on Anthropic's own pages.

Websites advertising a "Claude student promo code" or a "50% student discount" are not quoting Anthropic. The official pricing page lists no student price, and the only education option it mentions is the institution-wide Education plan.

Claude for Education: free access through your university

Anthropic launched Claude for Education on April 2, 2025. It is a "university-wide plan for institutions, including its students, faculty, and staff". The university pays Anthropic, and students sign in with their school identity. Anthropic does not publish the price; universities have to contact the education team. The pricing page describes the Education plan as discounted access for students, faculty and staff, plus dedicated API credits for research and learning, but it gives no figures.

Which universities have it

Anthropic does not publish a full list of partner schools. At launch it named three: Northeastern University (its first design partner, with access for 50,000 students, faculty and staff across 13 campuses), the London School of Economics and Political Science, and Champlain College. The education page now also shows logos for the University of San Francisco, Northumbria University, Syracuse University, Dartmouth, the University of Virginia and the University of Pittsburgh. Other schools have announced their own deals, so the only reliable check is your university's own IT or AI pages.

What access looks like in practice

Each school's contract is different, so terms vary. Two published examples show how wide the range is:

  • Northeastern University describes its access as the premium version of Claude, free to students, faculty and staff across its global campuses, with sign-in guidelines at a university login page (Northeastern Global News).
  • Champlain College gives all on-campus and online students Claude Pro at no charge through June 2027. Students create a Claude account with their champlain.edu email, and Anthropic upgrades it to Pro within about a week, with no request needed. Students who already paid for Pro on that email are told to cancel, and the account converts when the paid term ends (Champlain College Online).

So "free Claude for students" can mean an enterprise-style workspace your school manages, or a regular Pro upgrade tied to your school email. Read your school's instructions: if it uses single sign-on, a personal account made with a private email will not get the upgrade.

Learning mode

Claude for Education launched with learning mode, which guides students' reasoning with Socratic questions instead of handing over answers, and offers templates for research papers, study guides and outlines. In August 2025 Anthropic made a "Learning" style available to all Claude.ai users and added Explanatory and Learning output styles to Claude Code (Engadget reporting). You no longer need a university plan to try learning mode.

What if your school doesn't have it?

You can't buy Claude for Education as an individual. What you can do is point your university's IT, library or teaching-and-learning office to Anthropic's education contact page. Student government requests and faculty interest often move these decisions, but whether to sign a contract is up to the school.

The Claude Campus program (2026-27)

Claude Campus is Anthropic's student leadership program, and it is the only Anthropic route an individual student can apply to directly. It replaced the earlier Claude Campus Ambassadors and "For student builders" forms, which now redirect to the Campus page. It is "a full school year program" running from September 2026 to June 2027. Anthropic runs it with "programmatic support from an external agency".

TrackWhoWhat leaders doStipend
Claude Builder ClubUndergraduatesSet up a club with Anthropic, run workshops with Anthropic guest speakers, hackathons and demo nights, share resources such as API credits with membersUSD 3,600
Claude Campus ConversationsMaster's students in STEM or the humanitiesHost discussion groups on AI and society, visit the Anthropic office, join the global ambassador communityUSD 3,600
Claude Science workshopsPhD students and postdocs actively using Claude in researchLead workshops for fellow researchers, take part in speaker events with Anthropic's math and science teamsUSD 3,600

Eligibility

  • Students anywhere in the world can apply to any track.
  • You must be 18 or older and have work authorization in your country of study. This matters for international students on visas that limit paid work, because the stipend counts as pay.
  • You need "some level of AI fluency and Claude proficiency", but not expert skills.
  • The graduate and PhD tracks may pick from a smaller pool of schools during the pilot.
  • Past ambassadors have to reapply and should say so on the form.

How to apply next time

  1. Watch claude.com/programs/campus in late summer. For 2026-27, applications opened on September 1 and closed on September 12, with rolling review.
  2. Choose the track that matches your degree level: Builder Club for undergraduates, Campus Conversations for master's students, Claude Science for PhDs and postdocs.
  3. Fill in the application on the campus page. Applying and taking part are free.
  4. Before the window opens, build a record of Claude use you can point to, such as a project, a club event or research work. The page asks for Claude proficiency, and PhD applicants must already use Claude in their research.

The campus page currently says both that applications run September 1 to 12 and that "The program is closed for Fall 2026". Treat 2026-27 applications as closed. Anthropic has not published dates for the next cycle.

What Builder Club members (not leaders) get

If your campus has a Claude Builder Club, joining as a member is the easiest way for most students to get hands-on help and possibly API credits. Anthropic says leaders receive "updates and resources like API credits" to share. It does not publish how many credits there are or how clubs hand them out, so ask your club lead.

Claude API credits for students

There is no public, self-serve Anthropic API credit grant for students. At launch in April 2025, Anthropic said students building with Claude could apply for API credits, but that form now redirects to the Campus program. The realistic options are:

  • Builder Club credits from your campus club lead, when your school has a club.
  • Research groups: principal investigators at accredited universities and nonprofit research institutes can apply for the team plan for scientists. Standard seats are $0 a month (normally $20) for 12 months from sign-up, Premium seats are $15 a month (normally $100), and groups can have 1 to 25 seats. Review usually takes 5 to 7 business days. PhD students are not eligible on their own, but a PI can add their research team. Extra usage credits come through the merit-reviewed AI for Science grant program.
  • Student founders with an incorporated startup can look at Anthropic's startup program.
  • Pay-as-you-go API use is billed at standard rates. See Claude API pricing and our guide to getting an Anthropic API key.

If you mostly need free model access for a class project, our guide to free AI credits covers providers with standing free API tiers.

What Claude costs if you pay yourself

Without a university plan, students pay the same prices as everyone else. These are the individual plans on Anthropic's pricing page as of October 2026 (US prices; tax may be added depending on where you live):

PlanPriceMain additions over the plan before it
Free$0Chat on web, desktop and mobile, web search, file creation and code execution, memory, app connections, Artifacts
Pro$20/month billed monthly, or $200/year billed up front (about $17/month)More usage, Claude Code, Projects, more models, task scheduling, Claude in Chrome
MaxFrom $100/month (5x Pro usage) or more for 20x usageMuch higher usage limits for heavy users

Worked example: a student who pays monthly for one nine-month academic year pays 9 x $20 = $180. The annual plan costs $200 for twelve months, so it only saves money if you would keep paying through at least ten months (10 x $20 = $200). For a single semester of four months, monthly billing costs 4 x $20 = $80. See the full Claude pricing breakdown and, if you code, Claude Code pricing.

How to get the most out of the free plan

Most students without a university deal start on the free plan. Some practical ways to make it go further:

  • Switch on the Learning style for coursework, so Claude walks you through problems instead of just giving answers. This also helps you stay within academic integrity rules.
  • Keep conversations focused. Long threads with large uploaded files use up your limits faster. Start a new chat for a new topic.
  • Take the free [AI Fluency for students](https://anthropic.skilljar.com/ai-fluency-for-students) course on Anthropic Academy. It covers using AI as a learning partner and for career planning, and ends with an assessment and a certificate of completion. It is taught by Prof. Joseph Feller (University College Cork) and Prof. Rick Dakan (Ringling College).
  • Check your course rules first. Your university's AI policy decides what is allowed in assessed work, whatever tool you use.

Our guide Is Claude free? explains the free plan's limits in detail, and Claude free trial covers whether there is any trial of Pro.

Claude for Teachers is not a student offer

In July 2026 Anthropic launched Claude for Teachers, which gives verified US K-12 school and district staff free premium Claude. Teachers and staff who sign up by June 30, 2027 get at least a full year of free access. On August 28, 2026, Anthropic extended it to whole schools and districts as a free Enterprise offering (Anthropic). It covers educators and school staff only. Students do not get accounts, and university students and international educators are not eligible. If you are a student teacher, check whether your placement school's staff verification covers you; Anthropic does not address this case.

How Claude compares with other AI student offers

Several AI companies do offer individual student deals, so if your school has no Claude plan, another tool may be cheaper for you. Terms change often; each of our pages below is dated and linked to its official sources.

Unlike these, Anthropic does not verify students individually. Your access to paid Claude depends on your institution, or on being selected for the Campus program.

Common mistakes

  • Signing up with a personal email when your school's deal is tied to your school email or single sign-on. Champlain, for example, says the upgrade only applies to champlain.edu accounts.
  • Paying for Pro on the same account your school will upgrade. Champlain tells students who already pay to cancel; the account converts when the paid period ends.
  • Expecting the Campus stipend without work authorization. Anthropic requires work authorization in your country of study.
  • Trusting third-party "student coupon" sites. Anthropic publishes no student codes.
  • Assuming access lasts after graduation. It depends on your school's contract, so ask before you store important work only in a university-managed workspace.

Frequently asked questions

›Does Claude have a student discount?

No. Claude's pricing page lists no discounted Pro or Max plan for individual students, and there is no student verification flow. Students get paid-tier Claude through a university Claude for Education plan.

›Is Claude free for students?

The free Claude plan is open to everyone, students included. Paid-tier access at no cost depends on your university having a Claude for Education agreement; some schools, such as Champlain College, give students Claude Pro at no charge for a fixed period.

›How much does Claude Pro cost if my school has no deal?

The same as for anyone else: $20 a month billed monthly, or $200 a year billed up front (about $17 a month). Max starts at $100 a month.

›How do I know if my university has Claude for Education?

Check your university's IT, library or AI pages, or ask the help desk. Partner schools usually publish sign-in instructions. Anthropic's education page shows some partner logos, such as Northeastern, LSE, Champlain, Syracuse, Dartmouth, the University of Virginia and the University of Pittsburgh, but it is not a complete list.

›What is the Claude Builder Club?

It is the undergraduate track of the Claude Campus program. Student leaders set up a campus AI builders club with Anthropic, host workshops, hackathons and demo nights, get a USD 3,600 stipend, and share resources, including API credits, with members.

›Can I still apply to the Claude Campus program?

Not for 2026-27. The application window ran from September 1 to 12, and the campus page says the program is closed for Fall 2026. Watch claude.com/programs/campus for the next cycle.

›Can students get Claude API credits?

Not through a public self-serve student offer. Builder Club leaders share API credits with members, but no amount is published. Anthropic's earlier 'For student builders' credit form now redirects to the Campus program. PIs at universities can use the separate team plan for scientists and the AI for Science grant program.

›Is Claude for Teachers available to students?

No. Claude for Teachers, launched in July 2026, is free for verified US K-12 school and district staff who are 18 or older. Students are not given accounts under it.

›What happens to my Claude access when I graduate?

Anthropic does not publish one rule, because access is set by your school's contract. Ask your university how long alumni keep access. At Champlain, for example, students choose the free plan or a paid Pro subscription after the promotion ends in June 2027.
