Google AI Pro Free for Students (2026): Free Gemini Plan for a Year
Free Google AI Pro for 1 year (US); free Google AI Plus for 1 year in other countries
Eligible US college students aged 18+ can get the Google AI Pro student plan free for one year if they redeem by December 31, 2026. It includes 4x higher Gemini usage limits, 5 TB of storage, Gemini Spark, Gemini Omni and study tools. In other countries the student pages offer Google AI Plus free for one year instead, with 2x higher limits and 400 GB of storage. Student status is verified through SheerID, a payment method is required, and the plan renews at the normal price unless you cancel.
Who is eligible
- Age 18+ with a personal Google Account (supervised accounts don't qualify)
- Enrolled at a higher education institution in a supported country; the plan you get depends on your institution's country
- US: eligible US college students get Google AI Pro; UK and other countries: eligible university students get Google AI Plus (Germany also includes apprentices)
- New users and students whose 2025 AI Pro trial has expired can qualify
- Not eligible: family group members, enterprise purchasers, discounted Pixel bundle subscribers, and Google One members billed through a third party such as Google Fi
- Student status must be re-verified each year
How to claim it
- Go to gemini.google/students and choose your country
- Click 'Claim Free Student Plan' (links to one.google.com/ai-student) and sign in with your personal Google Account
- Verify your student status with SheerID when asked (usually with your school email; you may be asked to upload proof of enrollment)
- Add a valid payment method (required at sign-up) and confirm the offer
- Set a reminder to cancel before the year ends if you do not want to pay
Catches & caveats
Value shown assumes 12 months of US Google AI Pro at $19.99/month. Benefits differ by country: in Germany, the free year is AI Plus for students and apprentices, followed by a reduced student price for up to four years and then Google AI Pro at EUR 21.99/month. Google's August 19, 2026 announcement covers 140+ markets where AI Plus is sold, excluding the US (which gets AI Pro), Bolivia, Albania, Canada, Macau, Hong Kong and Tunisia. The same announcement advertises up to 70% off an AI Pro + YouTube Premium student bundle, which isn't shown on the official US student page. Earlier versions of this offer with 2025 and April 2026 deadlines have ended.
Short answer: if you are 18 or older and enrolled at a US college, you can get Google AI Pro, normally $19.99/month, free for 12 months by redeeming before December 31, 2026. Outside the US, the same student page gives you a free year of the cheaper Google AI Plus plan instead. You need a personal Google Account, a SheerID student check and a payment method, and the plan renews at full price unless you cancel.
What you get: US AI Pro vs. AI Plus elsewhere
Google runs one student campaign but gives different plans depending on the country of your school. The offer terms say it directly: the plan included in the offer depends on the country or region of your eligible higher education institution. Here is what the official country pages list as of October 2026.
| US student plan (Google AI Pro) | UK student plan (Google AI Plus) | Germany student plan (Google AI Plus) | |
|---|---|---|---|

On the regular US subscriptions page, Google AI Pro also includes access to Gemini 4 Argon and the Pro and Flash models, 1,000 Google Flow credits, higher Jules limits, entry-level Google Antigravity limits, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, Google Home Premium (Standard), Gemini in Chrome with auto browse, YouTube Premium Lite and a 1M-token context window. Google AI Plus includes the Flash model, 200 Flow credits, Gemini in Gmail and Vids and 400 GB of storage. The student pages highlight only the study-related parts, so treat the subscriptions page as the full feature list. See our Google AI plans pricing breakdown for every tier.
What you don't get: the student plan is a consumer subscription. It does not include Gemini API credits for apps you build. For that, use the separate Gemini API free tier or the Google Cloud $300 free trial.
Study features on the student page
- Study notebooks: one notebook per course. Upload syllabi, lecture notes and readings, and Gemini builds study guides, summaries and a learning plan grounded in your own materials.
- Personalized quizzes and a performance tracker: quizzes generated from your notes, plus a tracker that shows which topics you need to work on.
- Student hub: a dedicated space in the Gemini app where your courses and content are connected.
- Gemini Live: real-time voice conversations for working through hard concepts.
- Interactive visualizations and image generation: diagrams and visuals that explain how a concept works.
- Connected apps: links to Gmail, Drive and other Workspace apps so answers can draw on your own files.
Google's example prompts cover exam prep (practice quizzes from your notes), step-by-step explanations of homework problems, feedback on essays against an uploaded rubric, checking calculations, and career prep such as resume edits and practice interview questions. Google's page advises uploading course files before asking questions that depend on them.
Who qualifies
The current offer terms (last updated August 19, 2026) require you to be 18 or older, be enrolled at a higher education institution in a supported country or region, verify your student status through SheerID, and have a Google Payments account with a qualifying payment method. The US page describes eligible users as "U.S. college students ages 18+". The UK page says "university students", and the German page includes both students and apprentices (Auszubildende).
Edge cases
- International students in the US: the plan follows your institution's country, so a student at a US college is covered by the US AI Pro offer if they meet the other conditions.
- Under 18: not eligible, even if you are already at university.
- School-managed accounts: you need a personal Google Account. Accounts managed by a school or employer, and supervised accounts, can't take the offer.
- Family groups: if your Google account is part of a Google One family group, the terms say you don't qualify. You would have to leave the family group first.
- Existing subscribers: discounted Pixel bundle subscribers and people billed for Google One through a third party (such as Google Fi) are excluded. Google's general AI Pro help also says Google One members who subscribed through a third-party partner or Pixel Pass can't sign up directly.
- 2025 student trial users: if your earlier AI Pro student trial has ended, Google says you can qualify again.
- High school students: the offer is for higher education. Google publishes no high school version.
Google reserves the right to decide eligibility at its discretion, and it does not publish a country-by-country list. Its August 19, 2026 announcement says the AI Plus offer covers 140+ markets where AI Plus is sold, except Bolivia, Albania, Canada, Macau, Hong Kong and Tunisia. If your country has a page under gemini.google/<country>/students, check it for the local plan and price.
How to claim it, step by step
- Open gemini.google/students and pick your country, or go straight to the US page.
- Click Claim Free Student Plan. It takes you to one.google.com/ai-student.
- Sign in with your personal Google Account, not your school Workspace account.
- When prompted, choose Verify student status. SheerID asks for your school and usually your school email. If it can't confirm you instantly, you may be asked to upload a document showing current enrollment, such as a dated enrollment letter or class schedule.
- After verification, add a payment method. You won't be charged during the free year, but the card is required to start the subscription.
- Confirm the offer. Your Google One page should now show the student plan and its renewal date.
- Open the Gemini app and check that your plan name shows under your profile. Then create a study notebook for each course you take this term.
Do this before December 31, 2026. That is the redemption deadline in both the student pages and the offer terms. Once you have redeemed, the 12 months run from your sign-up date.
After the free year: renewal, cancellation and your data
The offer is a free trial of a paid subscription. In the US, Google AI Pro will "automatically charge $19.99/month after the trial ends" unless you cancel. In the UK the AI Plus plan renews at GBP 4.49/month. Germany works differently: the student price can continue for up to four years in total while you remain a student or apprentice, after which the subscription renews as Google AI Pro at EUR 21.99/month including VAT. Each country page says eligibility must be verified again every year to keep the student pricing.
How to cancel
In the Gemini app, go to Settings & help > Manage subscription > Cancel membership and confirm. You can also manage the plan from Google One. The student pages say you can cancel at any time. Cancelling during the free year should keep your access until the end of the paid-up period, but Google's student page doesn't spell this out, so check the date shown on your Google One page after cancelling.
What you lose
According to Google One Help, cancelling AI Pro removes the Pro features in the Gemini app, extra storage and other Google One benefits, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, and the bundled YouTube Premium Lite plan. Your chats and study notebooks stay in your account, but they fall back to the free plan's limits.
Storage is the main trap. If you fill much of the 5 TB (or 400 GB) and then cancel, you drop back to 15 GB. Google One Help says that over quota you can't upload to Drive or back up Photos, and Gmail may stop sending and receiving. If you stay over quota for two years or more, Google may delete content, after at least three months' notice. Download or clear large files before the year ends.
What it's worth, and how it compares
At US list price, 12 months of Google AI Pro is 12 x $19.99 = $239.88. A UK student's free year of AI Plus is 12 x GBP 4.49 = GBP 53.88. No other big AI lab currently gives students a full year of its mid-tier consumer plan as broadly as this:
| Offer | What students get | Our page |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Pro / AI Plus | 12 months free (US: AI Pro; elsewhere: AI Plus) | This page |
| ChatGPT Plus | Time-limited promotion for US college students; check the page for current status | ChatGPT Plus student offer |
| Claude | No individual discount; access through university plans | Claude student discount |
| GitHub Copilot | Free Copilot Student plan while verified | Copilot for students |
| Perplexity Pro | Discounted Education Pro plan for verified students | Perplexity Pro for students |
| SuperGrok | 2025 student promotion ended; no current official offer found | SuperGrok for students |
If you write code, the Google plan pairs well with the GitHub Student Developer Pack: AI Pro's higher Jules limits cover asynchronous coding tasks, while Copilot Student covers in-editor completions. For a wider list of free routes, see our guide on how to get free AI credits.
Getting the most out of the year
- Claim at the start of a term, not mid-semester, so the 12 months cover two full terms plus exam periods.
- Build one study notebook per course and add every syllabus, slide deck and reading list early. Quizzes and summaries are grounded in what you upload, so a complete notebook gives better results.
- Use Deep Research for literature searches, then check every cited source yourself before you put it in an assignment. Your school's academic integrity rules still apply.
- Use the 5 TB carefully. It is useful for project datasets and media, but keep anything essential under 15 GB or have an export plan for when the year ends.
- Developers: use the Gemini app for learning and prototyping prompts, then get a free API key for code via our Gemini API key guide. API usage is billed separately; see Gemini API pricing.
History of the offer
- 2025: Google ran earlier student campaigns, first with Google One AI Premium and then with Google AI Pro, in the US and a list of other countries. The 2025 terms had a December 9, 2025 redemption deadline.
- January 2026: a US-only version of the terms required subscribing through the Google Play Store and had an April 30, 2026 deadline. That version has ended.
- August 19, 2026: the current terms were published. US college students get a free year of AI Pro, students elsewhere get a free year of AI Plus, and the redemption deadline is December 31, 2026. MacRumors also reported a discounted AI Pro + YouTube Premium bundle for US students ($8.99/month for up to four years). That bundle is not shown on the official US student page, so we treat it as reporting only.
Common problems
- Verification fails with a school email: SheerID may ask for a document instead. Use a recent, dated proof of enrollment that shows your name, school and the current term. Your university IT desk can't approve it, because the offer is run by Google and SheerID.
- Offer button missing: check that you are signed in with a personal account, that the account is not in a family group, and that you don't already have a Google One plan billed through a partner.
- Wrong plan offered: the plan follows your institution's country. A UK university gets AI Plus even if your Google account was created in the US.
- YouTube Premium Lite not activating: Google One Help says the included Premium Lite won't activate while you have a standalone YouTube Premium or Premium Lite subscription. It activates once you cancel the standalone one.
Frequently asked questions
›Is Gemini free for students?
Yes, for a year. Eligible US college students 18+ can get Google AI Pro free for one year, and students in many other countries can get Google AI Plus free for one year. You must redeem by December 31, 2026. The basic Gemini app is free for everyone anyway.
›Do I need a credit card for the Google AI Pro student offer?
Yes. Google requires a valid payment method at sign-up. After the free year, AI Pro renews at $19.99/month in the US unless you cancel.
›Can international students get Google AI Pro free?
The plan depends on the country of your school, not your nationality. Outside the US the student offer is Google AI Plus, not AI Pro. For example, the UK page offers AI Plus free for a year, then GBP 4.49/month. An international student enrolled at a US college falls under the US offer if they meet the other conditions.
›I used the 2025 student trial. Can I claim again?
Yes. Google's student pages say students whose 2025 AI Pro trial has expired can qualify.
›How does Google verify that I'm a student?
The offer terms say student status is verified by the third-party service SheerID. You normally confirm with your school email; if that fails you may be asked to upload proof of enrollment, which is reviewed manually.
›Can I use my school Google account?
No. The offer needs a personal Google Account. School-managed Workspace accounts get Gemini features through the school's own Workspace for Education setup instead. Use your school email only for the verification step.
›What happens after the free year?
The subscription renews at the normal monthly price (US AI Pro $19.99, UK AI Plus GBP 4.49) unless you cancel. In Germany, the plan moves to a reduced student price for up to four years in total and then to AI Pro at EUR 21.99/month. Eligibility must be verified again each year.
›What happens to my files if I cancel and I'm over 15 GB?
You keep access to your account, but you can't upload new files to Drive or back up Photos, and Gmail may stop sending and receiving. If you stay over quota for two years, Google may delete content, after at least three months' notice.
›Can I share the student plan with my family?
No. Members of a Google One family group are excluded from the student offer, so you can't claim it inside a family group or add the student plan to one.
