Is SuperGrok Free for Students? (2026 Status)
Was 2 months free SuperGrok with .edu email (2025); no current official student offer found
In April 2025 Elon Musk and xAI's official Grok account said US students with a .edu email could get SuperGrok free for two months. No current student offer exists on xAI's official channels. Since October 12, 2026, new Grok subscribers sign up for The X Subscription (Plus $8, Premium $30, Super $100, Ultra $200), and xAI's announcement lists no student or education pricing.
This offer has ended. We keep the page so you know it no longer works; see the alternatives below.
Who is eligible
- 2025 promo: US students signing up with a .edu email
How to claim it
- No current official claim flow exists. Use Grok's Free tier at grok.com, or check xAI's official channels for any new student offer
Catches & caveats
Marked expired: the only official student statements are April 2025 posts on X. xAI's Oct 2026 X Subscription announcement mentions no student offer, and SuperGrok has been folded into the Premium tier for new subscribers. A later @grok reply reportedly said free SuperGrok for students isn't available; we could not confirm it. xAI's El Salvador schools partnership (announced Dec 11, 2025) is a separate government program with no public sign-up.
No, SuperGrok is not free for students in 2026. xAI ran a short promotion in April 2025 that gave US students with a .edu email two free months of SuperGrok, but nothing on xAI's official channels shows a student offer today. Since October 12, 2026, new customers sign up for The X Subscription instead of SuperGrok, and xAI's announcement lists no student, education or trial pricing. You can still use Grok's Free tier, with limits.

What the 2025 student offer was
In early April 2025, the founder of the developer platform IUDEX posted on X that students would get two months of SuperGrok free. Elon Musk replied, "SuperGrok is free for students", and xAI's official @grok account later described the offer as two free months for people signing up with a .edu email address. Ukrainian tech site dev.ua reported the exchange on April 10, 2025.
- What: two months of SuperGrok, xAI's paid Grok subscription at the time.
- Who: students signing up with a .edu email. In practice that meant US institutions.
- International students: not covered. Reporting at the time noted that UK students, who usually have .ac.uk addresses, weren't clearly included. The IUDEX founder said an "edu equivalent" for other countries was planned, but no international version was ever announced by xAI.
- Terms: xAI never published a terms page, end date or detailed FAQ for the promotion. Everything official about it comes from posts on X.
There is no official page where the offer can still be claimed. Because the only official statements are from April 2025, and xAI's 2026 plan changes say nothing about students, we list this offer as expired. A later reply from the @grok account reportedly said free SuperGrok for students isn't available, but we could not confirm that post.
What changed in October 2026
On October 12, 2026, xAI introduced The X Subscription, a single plan that bundles Grok, Cursor's coding agents and X Premium features. New customers can no longer pick standalone SuperGrok. Here are the tiers from xAI's announcement:
| Tier | Monthly price | Usage | Highlights |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Limited | Daily Grok access, a starter allowance for Cursor's coding agents, standard X |
| Plus | $8 | Base | More Grok and Cursor usage, X checkmark, creator tools, fewer ads |
| Premium | $30 | 4x Plus | Benefits of SuperGrok, Cursor Pro and X Premium+ |
| Super | $100 | 15x Plus | Everything in Premium |
| Ultra | $200 | 50x Plus | Everything in Premium |
xAI says the Premium tier includes benefits that previously cost $90/month combined. Paid tiers share one pool of Grok model usage across Grok and Cursor, and usage beyond your plan is billed at API list prices through top-ups. Existing SuperGrok subscribers keep their current plan and price unless they switch, and switching comes with a prorated refund for the old plan. Full details are on Grok pricing and in our SuperGrok guide.
xAI's announcement mentions limited-time offers for existing subscribers who switch plans. It does not mention any student, education or new-customer trial offer.
How students can use Grok for free today
- The Free tier. The X Subscription's Free tier gives daily Grok access and a starter allowance for Cursor's coding agents. xAI doesn't publish exact message counts, and your account shows what is left.
- Through your school or government. xAI's only education program is a national partnership with El Salvador, announced December 11, 2025, to deploy Grok in more than 5,000 public schools over two years. It reaches students through their schools and has no public sign-up for individuals.
- The Grok API for projects. If you are building something, check whether xAI has any API credit offers. Our xAI Grok API free credits page tracks this. At the time of writing, xAI's docs confirm promo-code redemption but no standard signup credit.
Getting the most out of the Free tier
- Spread heavy use across the day. The Free tier's allowance is daily, so a long research session may run out before an evening of homework.
- Know what a paid plan changes. On paid tiers, Grok and Cursor draw from one shared pool of Grok model usage, so heavy coding also eats into your chat allowance.
- Upgrade only for a specific need. If you hit the limit regularly, Plus at $8/month is the cheapest paid step. It covers Grok models only, while Premium adds the SuperGrok-level features and third-party models in Cursor.
What a paid Grok plan costs a student
With no student price, students pay the same as everyone else. Cursor's pricing docs, which list the same X Subscription tiers, give yearly prices of $80 for Plus, $300 for Premium, $1,000 for Super and $2,000 for Ultra, before tax. Here is the arithmetic for the two tiers most students would consider:
| Tier | One semester (4 months, monthly billing) | 12 months, monthly billing | 12 months, yearly billing | Yearly saving |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plus | 4 x $8 = $32 | 12 x $8 = $96 | $80 | $16 |
| Premium | 4 x $30 = $120 | 12 x $30 = $360 | $300 | $60 |
Yearly billing saves money only if you'll use Grok all year, including over breaks. If you mainly need it for one term, paying monthly and cancelling afterwards costs less. For comparison, ChatGPT Plus is $20/month, and eligible US students can get four months of it free until October 31, 2026.
If you already have SuperGrok
If you subscribed to SuperGrok before October 12, 2026, including after a 2025 student trial, xAI says nothing changes automatically. You keep your current plan, price and features. When the switch option appears in your billing settings, you can move to a new tier and get a prorated refund for the old plan. xAI says each comparable new tier gives more usage per dollar than the plan it replaces, so compare usage, not just price, before switching. Launch coverage reported that switching can't be undone once accounts are merged.

Watch out for fake student offers
- Coupon sites. Several coupon and affiliate sites advertise Grok student discount codes. None we found cite an xAI source. A real xAI promotion would appear in the Grok app, on grok.com or on xAI's official X accounts.
- Shared or resold accounts. Some sites sell discounted or shared SuperGrok access. These are not xAI offers, and account sharing may break xAI's terms.
- Old articles. Many guides published in 2025 still describe the two-month .edu offer as if it were live. Check the date and look for an official source.
- Out-of-date prices. Older pages quote SuperGrok at $30/month. For new customers, that price now buys Premium in The X Subscription, which includes SuperGrok benefits.
How to check for a new student offer yourself
- Read xAI's news page at x.ai/news. Plan launches, such as The X Subscription and the El Salvador program, were announced there.
- Check the official accounts on X: @xai, @grok and Elon Musk. The 2025 student offer was announced only on X.
- Open the upgrade screen at grok.com or in the Grok app while signed in. If a student price or trial exists, it should appear at checkout before you pay, along with any verification step.
- Be wary of anything that asks for payment outside grok.com, X or the app stores. A genuine xAI promotion is billed through your Grok or X account.

Grok API
No free credits confirmed on official docs; promo codes only
xAI's current API docs describe prepaid credits, auto top-up and promo-code redemption but do not mention a signup credit or a $150/month data-sharing credit program. The only officially documented free API credit was $25 per month for everyone during the public beta announced on 4 November 2024, which ran until the end of 2024. xAI's enterprise FAQ says it may, in some instances, offer free credits in exchange for permission to train on business data, but publishes no amount or sign-up route. Third-party sites report the later $25 signup and $150/month data-sharing credits ended; we could not confirm this on an official page.

It includes 4x higher Gemini usage limits, 5 TB of storage, Gemini Spark, Gemini Omni and study tools. In other countries the student pages offer Google AI Plus free for one year instead, with 2x higher limits and 400 GB of storage. Lovable
50% off Lovable Pro (100 credits, billed monthly) for up to 12 months
Lovable gives students and teachers 50% off Lovable Pro for up to 12 months. That cuts the 100-credit monthly plan from $25 to $12.50 a month. You verify by logging in with your school email, and no card is needed to verify. Lovable's docs limit the discount to the 100-credit Pro plan billed monthly. Higher tiers, annual billing, Business and top-ups are charged at full price.
Codex
$100 in Codex credits (2,500 credits)
OpenAI gives verified university students in the United States and Canada $100 in Codex credits (shown as 2,500 credits) to use with Codex in ChatGPT. It works with a personal ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus or Pro account. Students verify through SheerID with their university email, and the credits expire 12 months after they are granted.
