Claude Free Trial (2026): Pro, Max & Claude Code Trial Options

Verified ·7 min read

Claude has no standard free trial for Pro or Max. As of October 17, 2026, Anthropic's pricing page lists trials only for sales-assisted Enterprise plans. The closest thing for individuals is a guest pass: eligible Claude Code users can share a free week of Claude Code from inside the app.

If you just want to try Claude, the permanent Free plan needs no card. For what Free includes and how its limits work, see Is Claude free?. This page covers the ways to test the paid features.

Claude guest passes: the closest thing to a Pro trial

Anthropic's Claude Code docs describe the `/passes` command as: “Share a free week of Claude Code with friends. Only visible if your account is eligible.” That one line is the only official description. Here's how it works in practice:

  1. A friend with an eligible paid account runs `/passes` in Claude Code and copies a pass link.
  2. They send you the link.
  3. You open it, sign in or create a Claude account, and follow the steps on screen.
# Run inside Claude Code (eligible accounts only)
/passes

Anthropic hasn't published which accounts are eligible, how many passes each account gets, or whether the person sharing receives anything. Third-party posts describe limits such as three passes per account and a small usage credit for the sender if the guest later subscribes, but these details aren't in Anthropic's documentation, so treat them as unconfirmed.

Anthropic hasn't published a help-center page with guest-pass terms. Third-party posts disagree on whether a card is needed and what happens when the week ends. Read the claim screen carefully. If it asks for a card, check whether it renews automatically and set a reminder to cancel.

How to get the most out of a one-week pass

  • Install Claude Code before you claim the pass, so you don't spend trial days on setup. See how to install Claude Code.
  • Pick one or two real tasks from your own projects, such as a bug you've been putting off or a test suite you need to write. You'll learn more than from toy examples.
  • Try plan mode on a larger change. Our Claude Code plan mode guide explains how to have Claude propose a plan before it edits files.
  • Check your usage as you go. The `/usage` command in Claude Code shows how much of your allowance you've used, which tells you whether Pro would be enough or whether you'd need Max.
  • Decide before day seven. Note the end date when you claim the pass.

Is there a Claude Code free trial?

Not as a standard offer. Claude Code isn't on the Free plan, and Pro doesn't come with a trial. Your options for trying it cheaply:

  • Guest pass: a free week of Claude Code, if someone eligible shares one with you.
  • API credits: sign in to Claude Code with a Claude Console account. Anthropic's pricing documentation says new API users get a small amount of free credit. After that you pay per token. See Claude API pricing and how to get an Anthropic API key.
  • One month of Pro: monthly billing is $20. If you cancel, you keep Pro until the end of the month you paid for. See Claude Code pricing.

What testing on the API actually costs

If you use up the starter credits, small experiments are still cheap. As of October 2026, Anthropic's API prices include Claude Sonnet 5.5 at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, and Claude Haiku 5.5 at $0.10 and $0.50 for prompts up to 100,000 tokens. Here is a worked example of 200 test requests, each with 2,000 input tokens and 500 output tokens:

ModelInput (400,000 tokens)Output (100,000 tokens)Total
Claude Sonnet 5.50.4 × $2 = $0.800.1 × $10 = $1.00$1.80
Claude Haiku 5.50.4 × $0.10 = $0.040.1 × $0.50 = $0.05$0.09

Coding agents like Claude Code send much more context per request than this example, because they read files and tool results, so a day of real coding on the API can cost far more. Watch your Console spend for the first few days before deciding between API billing and a subscription.

Other legitimate free routes

  • University access: if your school has the Claude for Education plan, you get access with your school account. See Claude student options.
  • Open-source maintainers: Claude for Open Source gives six months of Max 20x to qualifying maintainers. It doesn't renew automatically, and you must activate within 90 days of receiving the link.
  • Startups: Claude for Startups offers perks, and API credits through partner VCs.
  • Gift subscriptions: Anthropic's help center says gift subscriptions are currently unavailable to purchase. Gifts bought earlier can still be redeemed on the web at claude.ai/gift/redeem, and they expire 365 days after the purchase date.
  • Limited-time promotions: Anthropic says it occasionally runs promotions and announces them through official channels. Its support team can't issue one-off discounts or coupons.

Anything sold as a “Claude Pro trial key” or a shared account is unofficial. The only trial routes Anthropic documents are guest passes, the API's starter credits and sales-assisted Enterprise trials.

If you received a gift subscription

Gifts work like a prepaid trial. Anthropic's help center explains what happens depending on your current plan:

Your current planWhat the gift does
Free or new accountYou're upgraded to the gifted plan immediately
Pro on the web, Pro giftYour Pro subscription is extended by the gift length
Pro on the web, Max giftYou get Max for the gift period, then Pro resumes; unused Pro time becomes account credit
Max on the web, lower-tier giftThe gift's value becomes credit on future invoices
Subscribed through Apple or Google PlayYou have to wait until that subscription ends; the gift doesn't expire while you wait

You can't stack or redeem several gifts at once.

Enterprise and team trials

Companies evaluating Claude for many users should talk to sales. The pricing page lists trials for the sales-assisted Enterprise plan, and the API pricing documentation says to contact sales about extended trials for enterprise evaluation. Self-serve Team and Enterprise plans don't list a trial, so a small team that wants to test without a sales process usually starts with a few monthly Team seats. Eligible nonprofits can get up to 75% off Team and Enterprise plans through Claude for Nonprofits.

What you can test on Free before paying

Free already covers a lot of what a trial would show you: chat on web, desktop and mobile, web search, file creation, code execution, memory, connectors, Artifacts and up to 5 Projects, using the Sonnet and Haiku models. What you can't test on Free is Claude Code, Opus and Fable models, Research, Claude in Chrome, scheduled tasks and Pro's larger usage allowance. If those are what you need, a guest pass or a single month of Pro is the cheapest way to try them.

Making a one-month Pro test count

  1. Choose monthly billing, not annual. Annual is cheaper per month ($17 vs $20) but you pay $200 up front.
  2. Subscribe on the web if you can. Refunds and plan changes depend on where you subscribed, and app-store subscriptions follow Apple's or Google's rules.
  3. Cancel early if you're unsure. A downgrade takes effect at the end of the billing period, so cancelling on day one still gives you the full month.
  4. Know the refund policy. Anthropic says payments are generally non-refundable except where its Consumer Terms or local law require otherwise.
  5. Keep your work. Chats, Projects and files stay in your account after you go back to Free.

Common mistakes when trying Claude's paid features

  • Expecting Pro to include API usage. Anthropic's help center says Pro doesn't include Claude Console API usage, which needs separate setup and billing. Max is different: the pricing page lists $100 (Max 5x) or $200 (Max 20x) a month in API credits for the Claude Platform.
  • Choosing annual billing to “try” Pro. The $200 annual payment is made up front, and payments are generally non-refundable.
  • Subscribing through an app store, then trying to manage it on the web. Plan changes, refunds and gift redemption work differently for Apple and Google Play subscriptions.
  • Assuming Free includes Claude Code. It doesn't, so testing Claude Code always needs a paid plan, a guest pass or API credits.
  • Paying for “trial keys” or shared accounts. These aren't official routes, and shared accounts may break Anthropic's terms.

›How do I get a Claude guest pass?

Ask someone with an eligible Claude account to run /passes in Claude Code and send you the link. The command only appears on eligible accounts, and Anthropic hasn't published the full terms.

›Is there a Claude Code free trial?

Not as a standard offer. The options are a guest pass (a free week), the small free credit new API accounts get, or one month of Pro at $20 that you cancel before renewal.
