Lambda Research Grant: Up to $5,000 in GPU Cloud Credits for AI Researchers
Up to $5,000 in Lambda cloud credits
Lambda offers qualifying AI researchers up to $5,000 in cloud credits to develop and showcase their work on Lambda Instances. Select research may be featured on Lambda's website. The grant launched in December 2024 with rolling applications. It is a research grant, not a startup program, and Lambda does not publish detailed eligibility criteria.
Who is eligible
- Qualifying AI researchers; Lambda's page does not define the criteria
- Work should use Lambda Instances (on-demand GPU cloud)
- Using Lambda Cloud requires a major credit card on file; debit and prepaid cards are not accepted
How to claim it
- Go to lambda.ai/research
- Click 'Apply for a grant' (or 'Apply now' lower on the page) to open the Lambda Research Grant Application Form
- Submit the form describing your research and compute needs

Catches & caveats
This is a grant for researchers, not startups. Lambda does not publish detailed eligibility, a review timeline or the credit expiry date. Using Lambda Cloud requires a major credit card. The December 2024 launch announcement mentioned mentoring from Lambda's Chief Scientific Officer; the current research page does not describe a mentorship program in detail.
The Lambda Research Grant gives qualifying AI researchers up to $5,000 in Lambda Cloud credits to develop and showcase research on Lambda's on-demand GPU instances. You apply through a form linked from lambda.ai/research. Lambda doesn't publish detailed criteria, a review timeline or an expiry date, and you need a major credit card on file to launch instances.
What you get
- Up to $5,000 in cloud credits for Lambda Instances, Lambda's self-serve on-demand GPU virtual machines.
- A chance to be featured: Lambda says select research may be showcased on its website. Its research page already lists grant-backed projects.
- Mentorship (as announced in 2024): the December 2024 launch announcement said selected researchers would get mentoring from Chief Scientific Officer Chuan Li. The current page mentions "research and mentorship" but gives no details.
The grant is a ceiling ("up to $5,000"), not a fixed amount. It is one of the smaller GPU grants we track, but it buys real compute because Lambda's on-demand prices are low and billing is per minute.
Who it's for
Lambda's page says only that it supports "qualifying researchers". It doesn't say whether you need a university affiliation, a PhD, a minimum publication record or a certain country of residence. Some third-party sites claim the grant is limited to academics with an institutional affiliation, but Lambda hasn't published that rule, so we don't repeat it as fact.
The projects Lambda highlights show what it has funded:
- SAEBench (ICML 2025): a benchmark for sparse autoencoders in language-model interpretability.
- VideoHallu (NeurIPS 2025): evaluates multimodal hallucinations in video understanding.
- VLM2Vec-V2 (arXiv 2025): multimodal embeddings for videos, images and visual documents.
- Think, prune, train, improve (ICLR 2025 workshop): scaling reasoning without scaling models.
- NeoBERT (TMLR 2025): a next-generation BERT encoder.
The common thread is AI research with a public output: a paper, benchmark or open model. If your project is a commercial product, this is the wrong program. Look at the startup alternatives below.
How to apply
- Open [lambda.ai/research](https://lambda.ai/research). Click Apply for a grant near the top, or Apply now in the "Join us in shaping the future of AI" section. Both open the same Lambda Research Grant Application Form.
- Describe your research. Lambda doesn't publish the form's questions. Be ready to explain the research question, why it needs GPUs, which hardware you'll use and what you'll publish or release.
- Estimate your compute. Turn your plan into GPU-hours on specific instance types using Lambda's pricing (see below). A request that adds up looks better than a round number.
- Submit and wait. When the grant launched, Lambda said applications are accepted on a rolling basis, with no fixed deadline. It does not publish a review time.
- Set up billing if you're selected. Create a Lambda Cloud account, add a credit card on the Billing page and check the grant in the Credits section.
Account and billing rules you need to know
The grant pays for usage, but the account still runs on Lambda's normal billing rules, from Lambda's official docs:
- A credit card is required. You must add a credit card on the Billing page of the Lambda Cloud console before launching any services.
- A $10 pre-authorization is placed to confirm the card is valid, and refunded within a few days.
- Major credit cards only. Prepaid and debit cards aren't accepted. Cards can also be declined if you transact over a VPN, if your issuer refuses the pre-authorization, or if the CVV or ZIP code is wrong.
- Per-minute billing. On-demand instances are billed in one-minute increments with no minimum.
- Weekly invoices. You receive weekly invoices for the previous week's usage. New credits appear right away, but usage against them shows only after the current weekly billing cycle closes.
- Storage keeps billing. Filesystems are billed per GiB per month in one-hour increments for as long as they exist, even when not attached to an instance. There are no ingress or egress charges.
An instance bills from when it boots and passes health checks until you terminate it, whether or not you're using the GPU. A forgotten 8-GPU instance can burn through a $5,000 grant in under a week. Terminate instances when a run finishes, and delete filesystems you no longer need.
How far $5,000 goes
Lambda's on-demand prices per GPU-hour at the time of writing, plus applicable sales tax or VAT (check lambda.ai/pricing for current rates):
| GPU | VRAM | Price per GPU-hour | GPU-hours for $5,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| B200 SXM6 (1x) | 180 GB | $6.99 | ≈ 715 |
| B200 SXM6 (8x) | 180 GB | $6.69 | ≈ 747 |
| H100 SXM (1x) | 80 GB | $4.29 | ≈ 1,165 |
| H100 SXM (8x) | 80 GB | $3.99 | ≈ 1,253 |
| H100 PCIe (1x) | 80 GB | $3.29 | ≈ 1,519 |
| GH200 (1x) | 96 GB | $2.29 | ≈ 2,183 |
| A100 SXM (8x) | 80 GB | $2.79 | ≈ 1,792 |
| A100 (40 GB) | 40 GB | $1.99 | ≈ 2,512 |
| A10 (1x) | 24 GB | $1.29 | ≈ 3,875 |
| A6000 | 48 GB | $1.09 | ≈ 4,587 |
| Quadro RTX 6000 (1x) | 24 GB | $0.69 | ≈ 7,246 |
The last column is $5,000 divided by the hourly price, before tax and storage. Some practical readings:
- One H100 for a month: 24 × 30 = 720 hours × $4.29 = $3,088.80, leaving about $1,900 for other runs.
- An 8× H100 node: 8 × $3.99 = $31.92 per hour, so $5,000 covers about 156 hours, or six and a half days of continuous use. That's enough for a mid-sized fine-tuning study, not for pre-training a large model.
- Interpretability or evaluation work: a single GH200 at $2.29/hour runs for about 2,183 hours, roughly three months around the clock.
- Ablations on smaller models: an A10 at $1.29/hour gives nearly 3,900 hours for many short, cheap experiments.
Lambda's multi-node 1-Click Clusters are reserved for two weeks or longer and billed weekly at higher per-GPU rates (for example $6.16 per H100-hour for a 16-GPU reservation). A $5,000 grant would not cover even the smallest two-week cluster reservation, so plan around on-demand Instances.
Tips for a stronger application and better use of credits
- Tie the request to a public output. Every project Lambda showcases led to a paper or public artifact. Say where you plan to submit or release the work.
- Match hardware to the job. Don't ask for H100 time if an A6000 or A10 will do. A careful plan reads better and stretches the grant further.
- Script your shutdowns. Use checkpoints and terminate instances when jobs end, since per-minute billing only saves money if machines stop.
- Keep data on a filesystem, not on the instance. Lambda bills persistent filesystems separately, so keeping datasets and checkpoints there lets you terminate instances between runs.
- Credit Lambda in your paper. The program exists partly so Lambda can showcase research. Acknowledging the compute grant is normal practice and helps if you're featured.

History of the grant
- December 9, 2024: Lambda announced the grant: up to $5,000 in cloud credits per researcher, rolling applications, and mentoring from CSO Chuan Li. Lambda said it expected to sponsor hundreds of researchers in the following year. The same announcement expanded Lambda's partnership with Nous Research, whose Researcher-in-Residence program would get compute through the grant, and said Lambda planned to double its research team within a year.
- Since launch: the 2024 announcement pointed applicants to lambdalabs.com/research. Lambda now runs its site at lambda.ai, and the grant lives at lambda.ai/research.
- 2025–2026: Lambda's research page added grant-backed papers at ICML, NeurIPS, ICLR and TMLR, plus its own work, such as backing The ARChitects team, which won ARC Prize 2024 and placed second in 2025.
- As of October 2026: the page still offers up to $5,000 in credits with the same apply link.
What Lambda doesn't publish
Lambda doesn't state formal eligibility rules, how many grants it awards, how long review takes, when grant credits expire, or whether you can apply more than once. If any of these affect your plans, ask after you apply and get the answer in writing.
Frequently asked questions
