How to get ChatGPT free or cheaper
- ChatGPT Free plan, which includes limited Codex access with GPT-6 Luna
- Eligible US college students can claim four free months of ChatGPT Plus in OpenAI's 2026 back-to-school offer (claim by October 31, 2026)
- Verified US and Canadian university students can get $100 in Codex credits
Codex
$100 in Codex credits (2,500 credits)
OpenAI gives verified university students in the United States and Canada $100 in Codex credits (shown as 2,500 credits) to use with Codex in ChatGPT. It works with a personal ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus or Pro account. Students verify through SheerID with their university email, and the credits expire 12 months after they are granted.
ChatGPT Plus
4 free months of ChatGPT Plus (US college students)
OpenAI's 2026 Back to School offer gives eligible US college and graduate students four free monthly billing periods of ChatGPT Plus, worth $80 at the $20/month list price. Students verify through SheerID and must add a payment method to activate it. Claims must be made by October 31, 2026.
OpenAI API
Free API credits, rate limit upgrades and solutions engineering time via partner VCs (amount not published)
OpenAI's startups page groups support into Build, Grow and Scale stages. Anyone can use the Build resources (starter repos, Build Hours and technical guides). The valuable benefits, free API credits, rate limit or usage tier upgrades and time with OpenAI's technical team, are unlocked through eligible VC partners. A partner VC gives you a referral code. OpenAI doesn't publish a public, self-serve credit amount.
Good to know
Prices are in USD. Go is priced locally in some countries (for example SG$13 and A$13 per month, as reported at launch). Plus and Pro are billed monthly. OpenAI's help center says annual billing is not available for Plus. Exact usage allowances are shown as estimates and change over time, so check the usage dashboard in your account for current limits.
As of October 17, 2026, ChatGPT costs $0 (Free), $8/month (Go, US price), $20/month (Plus), $100, $200 or $500/month (Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500), and $25 per user per month for Business, or $20 per user if billed annually. Enterprise and Edu have custom pricing. Since 2026, every ChatGPT plan also includes ChatGPT Work and Codex, OpenAI's agent and coding tools, and they draw on the same usage allowance as chat.
Plan-by-plan breakdown

Free
The Free plan lets you chat with ChatGPT at lower limits. OpenAI's pricing page says Free also includes quick Codex tasks with GPT-6 Luna at Standard speed in the desktop app, subject to rollout. OpenAI announced in January 2026 that it would test ads on the Free and Go plans, starting in the US. It said ads would appear only after you submit a prompt and would be labeled and kept visually separate from answers. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise are ad-free.
Go
Go launched in India in August 2025 and expanded worldwide in January 2026. It costs $8/month in the US, with local prices elsewhere (reported launch prices include SG$13 in Singapore and A$13 in Australia). Go gives more usage than Free and the same Codex model access as Free, which is GPT-6 Luna for lightweight coding tasks. Go doesn't include GPT-6.1 Sol: OpenAI's models page says Free and Go are not part of its launch rollout.
Plus
Plus is $20/month and is the plan most individual users should compare everything else against. It includes GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, limited GPT-6 Astra, and Codex across the web, CLI, IDE extension and iOS. It also includes cloud integrations such as automatic code review and Slack, and the option to buy extra credits when you run out. The help center says Plus is billed monthly only, with no annual plan or multi-month prepayment.
Plus usage in Work and Codex is measured in five-hour windows. OpenAI's estimates for local messages per five hours are 5 to 45 with GPT-6 Astra, 15 to 160 with GPT-6.1 Sol, 15 to 150 with GPT-6 Sol and 350 to 3,000 with GPT-6 Luna. The ranges are wide because a long, complex task uses far more than a short one. Weekly limits may also apply.
Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500
At DevDay on September 29, 2026, OpenAI split Pro into three monthly plans. The ChatGPT release notes describe Pro 500 as the plan with the highest included usage of the three and the only one with Astra Ultrafast. Pro 200 reopened to new subscribers at $200, with a changed included-usage allowance. All three Pro tiers currently have no five-hour limit in Work and Codex, but weekly limits may apply.
Existing Pro 200 subscribers: according to OpenAI's Pro tiers help article, if you had an active Pro 200 subscription at any point from September 22, 2026 to 10 a.m. Pacific on September 29, 2026, you keep the previous included allowance through October 29, 2026, as long as the subscription stays active. After that you move to the new, lower allowance at the same price.
OpenAI doesn't publish a single "x times Plus" multiplier for each Pro tier any more. Press and community reports put the new allowances at roughly 5x Plus for Pro 100, 10x for Pro 200 and 25x for Pro 500. These are not official figures, so check your usage dashboard for the real numbers.
Ultrafast on Pro 500 costs more usage: for GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol, it uses your included allowance at 8x the Standard rate, then draws from credits at 6x. Buying credits on Pro 100 or Pro 200 does not unlock Ultrafast.
Business
Business (formerly Team) costs $20 per user per month billed annually, or $25 per user billed monthly, with at least 2 users. You get a dedicated workspace with admin controls, SAML SSO and MFA, larger cloud VMs for Codex, and OpenAI does not train on business data by default. Standard Business seats have the same five-hour estimates as Plus. Workspaces can also turn on flexible pricing, which lets them buy shared ChatGPT credits once seats hit their limits.
Enterprise and Edu
Enterprise and Edu add priority request processing, SCIM, EKM, user analytics, domain verification, role-based access control, Compliance API audit logs, and data retention and residency controls. Prices are not published. On flexible pricing, usage scales with credits and there are no fixed rate limits. Without flexible pricing, most features have the same per-seat limits as Plus.
Worked cost examples
1. One person for a year: Go vs Plus vs Pro
| Plan | Monthly | 12 months |
|---|---|---|
| Go (US) | $8 | $8 × 12 = $96 |
| Plus | $20 | $20 × 12 = $240 |
| Pro 100 | $100 | $100 × 12 = $1,200 |
| Pro 200 | $200 | $200 × 12 = $2,400 |
| Pro 500 | $500 | $500 × 12 = $6,000 |
Plus costs $144 more a year than Go. Pro 100 costs five times as much as Plus, so it is only worth it if you regularly hit Plus limits. One way to check: if you would otherwise spend more than $80 a month on top-up credits with Plus, Pro 100 is likely cheaper.
2. A 10-person team on Business
Billed monthly: 10 × $25 = $250 a month, or $250 × 12 = $3,000 a year. Billed annually: 10 × $20 × 12 = $2,400 a year. Annual billing saves $600, or 20%, but commits you for the year.
3. Two people: two Plus accounts or Business?
Two Plus subscriptions cost 2 × $20 = $40 a month. Business for 2 users costs 2 × $25 = $50 a month billed monthly, or 2 × $20 = $40 a month billed annually ($480 a year). Per-seat limits are similar, so you are paying the extra for the shared workspace, SSO, admin controls and the default of no training on your data. If you don't need those, two Plus accounts are cheaper on monthly terms.
4. A student using the Plus offer
OpenAI's 2026 back-to-school offer gives eligible US college students four free monthly billing periods of Plus, which is worth 4 × $20 = $80. If you keep Plus for the rest of the year, you pay 8 × $20 = $160 instead of $240. See ChatGPT Plus for students for eligibility; the claim deadline is October 31, 2026.
How usage limits and credits work
ChatGPT Work and Codex share one allowance, so a long coding session uses up the same budget as agent tasks in ChatGPT. OpenAI publishes ranges rather than fixed message counts and asks you to check the usage dashboard (or run /status in Codex CLI) for your current limits and reset times.
When you run out, Plus and Pro users can buy ChatGPT credits. Credits are charged per million tokens at model-specific rates. For example, GPT-6.1 Sol costs 50 credits per 1M input tokens, 2.5 per 1M cached input and 250 per 1M output, while GPT-6 Luna costs 2.5, 0.25 and 12.5. The pricing page doesn't list the dollar price of a credit; you see it in your account when you buy. Fast mode uses credits at 2x the Standard rate and Ultrafast at 6x. Desktop voice costs $0.05 per minute from your Codex budget on personal plans.
Another option is an API key. Any user can run extra local Codex sessions with an API key, billed at OpenAI API prices. This doesn't include cloud features such as GitHub code review or Slack.
Which plan should you choose?
- Free: you use ChatGPT a few times a week and don't need the stronger models.
- Go: you hit Free limits but mainly chat and write, and $8 matters. Expect ads in some markets.
- Plus: you use ChatGPT daily, want GPT-6.1 Sol, or want real Codex use in the CLI or IDE. This is the right plan for most people.
- Pro 100: you hit Plus limits most weeks, especially in Codex.
- Pro 200 / Pro 500: you run agents for hours a day, or need Ultrafast (Pro 500 only).
- Business: two or more people need shared admin, SSO and the no-training default.
- Enterprise / Edu: you need SCIM, audit logs, data residency or usage-based contracts.
How ChatGPT compares with alternatives
Most rivals now sell a similar ladder. Claude has Pro at $20 and Max tiers at $100 and $200 (see Claude pricing). Google's AI Pro is $19.99 in the US, with Ultra from $99.99 (see Google AI plans pricing). Perplexity and Grok have their own Pro and premium tiers (Perplexity pricing, Grok pricing). For coding specifically, compare Plus with GitHub Copilot pricing and the Codex allowances on OpenAI Codex pricing.
Cancelling and changing plans
On the web, cancel from Settings in ChatGPT (the billing or account section, depending on your version). If you subscribed through the Apple App Store or Google Play, cancel through that store, because deleting the app or even your ChatGPT account does not cancel a store subscription. After cancelling, paid features stay on until the end of the current billing period, and OpenAI recommends cancelling at least 24 hours before the next billing date. Cancelling does not refund earlier charges. Your chats stay in the account, which drops to Free. Business workspaces are managed by the workspace owner, who controls seats and billing.
Plus, Pro and Go prices can differ by country and app store, and some regions show local prices that include tax. Check the price on the upgrade screen before paying rather than relying on the US prices on this page.
