Notion Education Plan (2026): Free Notion for Students
Free Notion Plus plan (Education Plan) for one-member workspaces
Notion offers a free Education Plan to students and educators at accredited colleges and universities. You need a school email. Notion's pricing page describes it as the Plus plan for free, limited to one member, with unlimited pages and blocks, unlimited file uploads, up to 100 guests and 30-day page history. Full Notion AI isn't part of the plan. Notion lists Plus with only a limited AI trial.
Who is eligible
- Students or educators at an accredited college or university listed in the World Higher Education Database (WHED)
- School email must be the account's primary email (student IDs and other documents not accepted)
- K-12 not eligible; personal email addresses (such as gmail.com) not eligible
- Workspace must have only one member and be on the Free plan before upgrading
- Re-verify school email once a year
How to claim it
- Sign up or log in to Notion with your school email (on desktop or web, not mobile)
- If you pay for Plus, downgrade to Free first and remove extra members
- Open Settings in the sidebar and select Upgrade plan
- Select 'Get free education plan'; recognized schools are upgraded automatically
Catches & caveats
Notion's pricing page calls the Education Plan the Plus plan for free, limited to one member. Plus comes with only a limited Notion AI trial. Full Notion AI is part of the Business plan, so don't expect free Notion AI as a student.
Short answer: yes, Notion is free for college and university students and educators. With a school email you get the Education Plan, which Notion's pricing page describes as its Plus plan for free, limited to one member. It includes unlimited pages and blocks, unlimited file uploads, up to 100 guests and 30-day page history. The plan has no end date, but you must re-verify your school email once a year. It does not include full Notion AI. Plus users only get a limited AI trial.
What you get
| Feature | Free plan | Education Plan (Plus for one member) |
|---|---|---|
| Pages and blocks | Unlimited for one person; block limit once a workspace has 2+ members | Unlimited |
| File uploads | Up to 5 MB per file | Unlimited (Notion lists about 5 GB as the per-file maximum on Plus) |
| Guests | 10 | Up to 100 |
| Page history | 7 days | 30 days |
| Site customization and publishing options | Basic | Extra customization and publishing options |
| Workspace members | Any number | One |
| Notion AI | Limited trial | Limited trial (as listed for Plus) |
For context, Notion's pricing page lists Plus at €9.50 per member per month and Business at €19.50 where prices are shown in euros. US visitors see USD prices, and Notion says annual billing saves up to 20%. For one person on Plus, 12 months at the monthly euro price would be 12 × €9.50 = €114 before tax. That is roughly what the Education Plan saves you each year.
What about Notion AI?
Notion's education page and help article don't mention AI. Its pricing page lists both Free and Plus with a limited trial of Notion AI, meaning the Notion Agent and AI meeting notes. Full Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes and Enterprise Search (beta) are included with Business. The Education Plan is free Plus, so you should expect the same limited AI trial, not unlimited Notion AI. Notion also sells Custom Agents, which are free to try and then cost $10 per 1,000 monthly Notion credits. We found no student discount on Notion AI or on Business.
If AI writing help is what you want, other student offers give more of it for free. See Google AI Pro for students, the ChatGPT Plus student offer, the Claude student discount and Perplexity Pro for students. Check each page for whether the offer is still running.
Who qualifies
- College and university students and educators. The school must be an accredited institution listed in the World Higher Education Database (WHED). Notion's pricing page says thousands of school domains qualify, not just .edu addresses.
- A school email as your main address. The school email must be your account's primary email. A school address added as a secondary email doesn't count.
- No documents. Notion doesn't accept student IDs or other documents. Verification works only through your email domain.
- Not K-12. Primary and secondary students and teachers aren't eligible. They can use the Free plan, which Notion says has unlimited storage for individuals.
- Not personal emails. Accounts tied to addresses such as gmail.com can't get the plan.
How to get it, step by step
- Sign up for Notion, or log in, with your school email as the account's main address.
- Use the desktop or web app. Notion says the upgrade doesn't work in the mobile app.
- If the workspace is on a paid Plus plan, downgrade it first: Settings → Billing → Change plan → Free. Note the warning below about paid upgrades.
- Remove any extra workspace owners or members so that only you remain. You can keep people as guests.
- Open Settings in the sidebar and select Upgrade plan.
- Select Get free education plan. If Notion recognizes your school's domain, the workspace is upgraded straight away.
- If you meet the requirements but don't see the option, contact Notion support. Notion doesn't say how long manual reviews take.
Notion's help center says that once a workspace has been upgraded to Plus, Business or Enterprise, it permanently loses Education eligibility, even if it later returns to Free. If you have ever paid for a workspace, you may need to start a new workspace to claim the Education Plan.
Renewal, graduation and what happens to your data
- No end date. The plan stays active as long as you can re-verify.
- Yearly check. You confirm your status with your school email once a year. Notion sends a reminder before your anniversary date, and you can re-verify as many times as you need.
- If you can't re-verify, for example after graduating, the workspace and all its content move to the Free plan automatically. You don't need to do anything, and your pages stay. Features then follow Free limits: 5 MB per upload, 10 guests and 7-day page history.
- One claim per email. Each school email can claim the offer once, for one workspace. Deleting the workspace doesn't free up the email for a new claim.
- Before you graduate, consider adding a personal email you'll keep, or exporting your notes. Your school may close your email account after you leave, and you sign in to Notion with that address.
Do you actually need it, or is Free enough?
For a single student, Notion's Free plan already has unlimited pages and blocks, because the block limit only applies once a workspace has two or more members. The Education Plan matters in three situations:
- Files larger than 5 MB. Lecture recordings, scanned readings, slide decks and datasets often exceed the Free plan's 5 MB upload limit. The Education Plan removes that limit.
- More than 10 guests. A seminar group, lab team or club page can easily pass 10 collaborators. The Education Plan allows up to 100 guests.
- Longer page history. If you write essays or a thesis in Notion, 30 days of history instead of 7 gives you more time to notice and undo a bad edit or a deleted section.
If none of these apply, the Free plan works fine. Even so, the Education Plan costs nothing, needs no card and only takes a minute if your school is recognized. Most eligible students have no reason to skip it.
For educators
Educators at eligible colleges and universities qualify on the same terms as students: a school email as the main address and a one-member workspace. Teachers can share course pages with students as guests, up to 100, which suits a syllabus hub, a reading list or an office-hours sign-up page. Classes with more than 100 participants can publish pages to the web instead of inviting each student. K-12 teachers aren't eligible.
Student organizations
Notion has a separate free offer for volunteer student organizations at verified institutions. Unlike the individual plan, it allows unlimited members, as well as up to 100 guests, unlimited uploads and 30-day page history. To apply, you must be a student representing a volunteer org at a WHED-listed institution. You must also be a member of the org's workspace, all workspace members must share your school email domain, and your institution must recognize the organization. Notion approves one application per organization and contacts applicants about approval.
Getting the most out of it
- Course hubs. Use one page per course with databases for assignments, readings and exam dates. Unlimited blocks means you won't hit limits during a long degree.
- Group projects. Invite teammates as guests (up to 100) on the pages they need. They don't need their own Education Plan to work on shared pages.
- Thesis and research. Unlimited file uploads let you keep PDFs and datasets with your notes. 30-day page history lets you undo bad edits.
- Portfolios. Extra site customization lets you publish a page as a simple portfolio or project write-up.
- Templates. Notion's Marketplace has a School category, and the Notion Campus Leaders Program lets students run workshops on their campus.
How it compares with other student offers
Notion's offer is free with no card needed, like the Figma Education plan for design and the JetBrains student license for coding. Notion's plan is narrower: one member and no full AI. For coding projects, the GitHub Student Developer Pack bundles many tools. If you are building a startup rather than studying, Notion has a separate startup program. For a wider list of free tools and credits, see our guide to free AI credits.
Common mistakes
- Signing up with Gmail and adding the school email later. Only the primary email counts. Change your account's main email to the school address.
- Trying to upgrade on a phone. The upgrade needs the desktop or web app.
- Keeping extra members. The individual plan allows one member. Move collaborators to guest access first.
- Paying for Plus first. A workspace that has been on a paid plan permanently loses Education eligibility.
- Expecting free Notion AI. Plus, and so the Education Plan, has only a limited AI trial. Full AI comes with Business.
- Assuming high school counts. K-12 isn't eligible, even with a school email.

No. K-12 students and educators aren't eligible, but they can use the Free plan.

›What happens when I graduate or lose my school email?

You can invite up to 100 guests, but the workspace can have only one member. Volunteer student organizations can apply for a separate student org plan with unlimited members.
